Who has it worse?
those having their fears confirmed or those unable/unwilling to confront reality?
A shared fantasy which seems ubiquitous is the idea that future historians will have discussions about this period of Convid insanity - who will then attempt to compare the experiences of the different types of actors in this great drama. It is the underlying assumption when people ask “What do you think future generations will look back on and say, gosh, those guys were so stupid back then!” The answer, of course, will be the same as it always is - ‘medicine’ or more broadly, our understanding of humanity. The example they will give is ‘vaccines’, the same way we refer to ‘leeching’. Or more broadly, they will say ‘those people of the past thought humans couldn’t be naturally healthy?!’ in the same tone we currently exclaim ‘They thought women and indiginous populations were not full humans and could not be educated?!’
There! Do you see how I assumed someone will be asking the question? Someone seeking an answer? If you are unsure why this is a wild assumption, ask a North Korean how their discussions go on the subject of society's failings. Better yet, ask them if they are even allowed to conceptualize love in a context outside of love for their oppressors. Ask a Chinese citizen what their explorations into the Tiananmen Square massacre yielded. Ask a Cuban how their political discussions at dinner go. Ask an American citizen how they solved their Military Industrial Complex. Ask a fully indoctrinated neighbour what they think about the vaccine injured. I think you get the idea, and while I think it is a fascinating topic, it is not a key point here. Having established that an aware and free future is in no way the most likely one, I want to assert that it is still a really valuable assumption to make, even if it is false. Just like the assumption that there is ‘karma’ is clearly false, but is still a super useful heuristic on which to base your treatment of others.
So with the assumption addressed, let’s ask again: Who will future generations decide had it worse?
Is it worse to be demonized by friends and family, aware of the health dangers they face, cut off from access to society, ignored, vilified, slandered, censored and fighting a lonely, demoralizing fight against a goliath of fascist technocracy?
Or,
Is it worse to be blithely living in systems you trust and then, blammo, while you remain blissfully unaware, your taxes are used to fund the largest military grade psychological warfare operation in history, you are forced or deceived into getting a deadly experiment, indoctrinated to blame your neighbour, dehumanise your family and friends, face the deterioration of your health, watch loved ones die and remain confused while trusted, but baffled doctors frantically search for a reason? To watch a few of your family and friends join some cult where they scream about vaccines being unsafe, then refuse to take them for the good of us all, when they clearly are safe and effective.
Is it worse to be tricked into ignorantly building your own dystopian prison, or worse to watch it being built from the inside with full awareness?
If we of the freedom and awareness movement have achieved anything to limit the progress of tyranny, or to make truth more accessible, is it better to have fought consciously or to be unaware and ungrateful?
Naomi Wolf presents an interesting answer here. She suggests that victims of sexual abuse are far more susceptible to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) when they feel they had no opportunity to fight back.
Since we are all subjected to the same abuse, perhaps then, we who are fighting this lunacy have it best. We at least feel we have some understandings and tools at our disposal. Those with whom were are trying, yet failing to share those tools and understandings often make us angry/frustrated, however in the long term, perhaps they have it worse. They are being violated by systems/people they love and trust, and being told that it is done out of love, then are told they are special and won’t be punished, but then get punished and get told they brought it on themselves, try not to think about it.
When I put it in this context - when I make it clear just how beaten and abused these people really are by psychological torture and an abusive relationship with those they think they can trust, I rather think that they have it worse. At least I can identify, then face my enemies and fight, even if it is with as flimsy a weapon as speaking honestly or writing on Substack with a genuine attempt to seek truths or understandings.
Then I remind myself that nothing is so black and white. For those of us who get worked up about hypocrisy, cognitive dissonance, censorship, indoctrination, genocide and dishonesty, it would be far worse to be in the group ‘trusting the experts’. That is why we make the choices we do.
Conversely, for those who get uncomfortable challenging any orthodoxy, going against a group, questioning authority, or dwelling on cause, effect, implications, then attempting to empathize with the vaccine injured, exploring conspiracy facts/theories or confronting their own role/feelings in these violations would be a special form of agony.
So perhaps, as usual, it is the next generation who have it worse. After all, it is their inheritance of resources, societal stability, functioning systems and civil liberties which are being spent. At least they will also, as usual, deal with it the best since they are young and adaptable. Here’s hoping they are able to look back at us from the Great Awakening and say ‘on the whole, the insanity didn’t last too long’!
I'm not in the 'ignorance is bliss' camp. I would rather know the terrible truth than live a beautiful lie. The interesting thing is that I appreciate the beauty of life (especially the natural world) far more, now that I have some sense of the depravity of those who presume to rule over us. There's nothing like contrast, I guess.
"as flimsy a weapon as speaking honestly"
Don't underestimate the sturdiness of the weapon of truth. The whole totalitarian system depends on everyone accepting the lies. The smallest intrusion of truth into that web of lies threatens the whole system. That's why dissent has to be crushed. The more voices speaking truth, the harder it will be to hold back the tide.
